The CarMax Foundation Awards $155,000 Grant To Expand Richmond Summer Basketball League

June 30, 2011

RICHMOND, Va. (June 30, 2011) - CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, announced today that The CarMax Foundation has awarded a grant of $155,000 to the Enrichmond Foundation for the CarMax Summer Basketball League. The grant will fund the expansion of the league to include a new third court, allowing more than 480 boys and girls to play in the league, as well as restoration of an existing building for concessions.

“We are fortunate to have a company like CarMax in our community,” said City of Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones. “CarMax continues to make an impact on our city by providing funds to support the CarMax Summer Basketball League that hundreds of children have enjoyed for the past four years.  Now, this year, by helping build another new court, they are allowing us to include even more youth and expand programming to include a wheelchair league. We thank CarMax for their partnership and dedication as we continue to Build a Better Richmond.”

A ribbon-cutting ceremony featuring CarMax President and CEO Tom Folliard and Richmond City Chief Administrative Officer Byron Marshall, begins today at 4 p.m. at the Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, located at 4901 Old Brook Road. This will be the fifth consecutive year that Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities has partnered with CarMax to provide Richmond area boys and girls, between the ages of 10 to 17, with a safe, positive and competitive basketball league during the summer break. Since 2007, more than $500,000 has been donated by The CarMax Foundation and CarMax, Inc. to establish and maintain the league.

“The league provides an outlet for Richmond area youth to build character and develop leadership skills that can make a lasting difference in their lives,” said Lynn Mussatt, president of The CarMax Foundation. “As we enter our fifth year partnering with Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities, we have already seen the positive effect the league has on past participants.”

“It is great to see young people engaged in the great American sport of basketball,” said Dr. Norman Merrifield, the director of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. “It’s fantastic to see our youth become entrenched in the game and learning important lessons in physical activity, team work and sportsmanship. CarMax is truly committed to helping our young people become future leaders in our community.”
