CARMAX FOUNDATION AWARDS $80,000 IN GRANTS TO
RICHMOND AREA ORGANIZATIONS
RICHMOND, Va. (October 13, 2008)-CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, announced today that The CarMax Foundation has awarded $80,000 in grants to Richmond area nonprofit organizations. The grants are going toward programs that provide significant educational and leadership opportunities for youth and families throughout Greater Richmond.
- Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond - $20,000 for the after school programs at the Southside Unit, one of the 12 facilities located in Richmond-area neighborhoods. These programs, offered to young people ages six to 18, encourage educational commitment, teach technical skills, allow the participants to build strong relationships, and also provide them with the skills to be a good role model for their peers.
- Partnership for the Future - $15,000 for the programming of internships and educational sessions for high school students. The participants intern for a company for three summers during high school and also take part in sessions that cover real-world subjects, including finances, physical well-being, business ethics, and relationships.
- Children’s Health Involving Parents (CHIP of Greater Richmond) - $12,500 for the School Readiness program. CHIP works with the whole family to prepare both the child and his parents for enrollment in school while working to remove any barriers that may prevent the child from regularly attending school. CHIP acknowledges that the parent is the first and most important teacher the child will know and encourages families to address challenges with best practices that have easy-to-measure results.
- Communities in Schools of Richmond (CIS) - $12,500 for Full-Service Middle Schools. Communities in Schools is the largest dropout prevention organization in the United States and CIS of Richmond currently operates at seven Richmond public middle schools. The CIS model offers students who are at most risk of dropping out of school the encouragement to graduate from high school with skills to go on to advanced education and achieve jobs that suit their talents.
- Greater Richmond Area Scholarship Program (GRASP) - $10,000 toward their scholarship goals. GRASP provides financial aid, scholarships and counseling to families with low to modest incomes. The organization’s objective is to increase the college attendance and graduation rate among families that do not have the necessary financial resources.
- Learning Bridge Foundation - $10,000 for the Learning Bridge Summer Academy, a five-week program during the summer for students heading into their 7th, 8th, and 9th grade years. The academy offers educational experiences through field trips, fundraising events, community service, and a college visit.
