RICHMOND, Va. (Nov. 18, 2008) —CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used vehicles, is pleased to announce that John Saber has been awarded the CarMax “Above and Beyond” award. Saber, facilities manager at the CarMax home office in Richmond, was honored for providing timely assistance to Houston-area CarMax stores and associates affected by Hurricane Ike.

On October 13, 2008, all four CarMax stores in the Houston market sustained damage caused by Hurricane Ike. Saber went to Houston, organized the on-site contractors, and worked closely with his facilities and construction colleagues to repair the CarMax properties. Saber also teamed with the contractors to assist CarMax associates’ homes that had been damaged as well.

“John spent an enormous amount of time and energy to make sure our stores were able to re-open within a few days of the storm,” said Donna Wassel, CarMax regional vice president and general manager of the Southwest region. “John’s efforts, along with those of Ed Kelly, manager of construction, were very much appreciated by the stores and the Houston-area associates he so selflessly served.”

Only a few select associates throughout the entire company nationwide are selected for the "Above and Beyond" award. The award consists of a bonus check of $1,000, a pizza party and a trophy. Store and regional management nominate associates and winners are selected for delivering exceptional customer service.
