Carmax Cares

Purpose and Mission

As part of its mission, CarMax is committed to being a responsible corporate citizen and good neighbor. The CarMax Foundation was established in 2003 to provide a means for CarMax’s charitable contributions. Since establishing the CarMax Foundation in 2003, nonprofit organizations have been awarded more than $5 million to help the communities where our Associates live and work.

The Foundation seeks to promote automobile passenger safety and improve the communities in which our Associates live and work. The Foundation is committed to:
  • Funding programs that show measurable results and benefits to the community
  • Supporting organizations that are fiscally responsible, transparent, and well-managed
  • Providing superior customer service
  • Engaging CarMax Associates in our philanthropic efforts
The Matching Gifts and Hours Program lets Associates give back to their communities.

Programs
The Foundation has four funding programs:
  • National Funding Program that addresses and improves automobile safety for families, and builds a competitive workforce through technical training
  • Regional Funding Program that provides annual grants to qualifying organizations with programs focused on education and youth leadership for children and families in the seven regions where we have stores
  • Richmond Funding Program that improves opportunities for children and families in the Richmond, Va., area, and promotes education and leadership through athletics, arts, and cultural programs
  • Matching Gifts and Hours Program that matches personal contributions of time and money made by CarMax Associates to public charities of their choice
  • Volunteer Grants Program that allows Associates to participate in team-building activities and donates $500 to aid organizations in their communities
  • In fiscal 2007, the CarMax Foundation donated about $1.2 million to these programs
Habitat for Humanity

In 2007, CarMax held its annual leadership conference in the hurricane-damaged city of New Orleans. Store managers from all business areas, as well as Home Office Associates at the director-level and above, contributed to Habitat for Humanity’s ongoing recovery efforts in the following ways:
  • Four hundred Associates contributed 3,200 volunteer hours to help build nine homes in the Upper Ninth Ward
  • Our volunteers presented a $32,000 check to the New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity
