RICHMOND, Va. (December 15, 2008)-CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, announced today that The CarMax Foundation has awarded Girl Scouts of Central Maryland a $10,000 grant as part of the Foundation’s Regional Giving Program.

The Girl Scouts of Central Maryland received the grant to support its Project Anti-Violence Education program that was created to prevent youth from becoming either perpetrators or victims of drug-related violence. The participating youth are encouraged by peers and mentors from various youth organizations to make positive decisions including not smoking, exercising, being involved in the community and staying focused on education.

“The CarMax Foundation is happy to help programs that strengthen children’s physical and emotional health,” said Tim Dillistin, Mid-Atlantic Regional Giving Committee chairperson and CarMax purchasing manager in Dulles. “The Project Anti-Violence Education program will offer Maryland children safe and positive alternatives to the temptation of drug use and gang involvement.”

This grant is part of the CarMax Mid-Atlantic region’s total of $100,000 donated to local organizations this year. The CarMax Foundation’s Regional Giving Program reinforces CarMax's commitment to funding programs that improve local communities. The Regional Giving Program provides grants to qualifying nonprofit organizations that have programs focused on education and youth leadership. Each of CarMax’s eight regions will grant up to $100,000, totaling $800,000 in grants nationwide this fiscal year. CarMax associates working within each of the regions select the local organizations to recommend for grants.
