RICHMOND, Va. (March 25, 2009)-CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, announced today that The CarMax Foundation has awarded Chicago Area Runners Association a $10,000 educational grant as part of the Foundation’s Regional Giving Program.
Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) received the grant for the CARA Road Scholars program. The teenagers participating in the program train for the Rock –N- Roll Chicago Half Marathon while learning lifelong lessons about dedication and perseverance. These young people work with mentors, set goals, learn about a healthy lifestyle and community involvement, and build their self esteem. The Road Scholars program uses the power of running and completing the half marathon as a model to set other significant goals, such as finishing high school and having successful careers.
“The CarMax Foundation is proud to support the CARA Road Scholars program,” said Rebecca Sckrabulis, Central Regional Giving Committee chairperson and CarMax location general manager in Hillside, Illinois. “The participating teenagers are learning healthy lifestyle habits and setting goals that will help them develop into great leaders in our community.”
The CarMax Foundation’s Regional Giving Program reinforces CarMax's commitment to funding programs that improve local communities. The Regional Giving Program provides grants to qualifying nonprofit organizations that have programs focused on education and youth leadership. CarMax associates working within each of the regions select the local organizations to recommend for grants.
