RICHMOND, Va. (June 25, 2009) - CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, has announced that The CarMax Foundation awarded a $35,000 grant to the Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation for the third season of the CarMax Summer Basketball League. The league kicked-off last night. Games are held at the Pine Camp Arts and Community Center, located at 4901 Old Brook Road.
This is the third year that the Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities has partnered with The CarMax Foundation to provide Richmond area youth a safe, positive and competitive basketball league during the summer break. This year’s grant will be used to buy uniforms, obtain equipment and supplies, and fund general league operations.
The league of boys and girls ranging in age from 10 to 17 will run from June 24 through August 7, with games beginning at 5:45 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The season will once again conclude with championship play-off games and trophies.
"We are excited to continue our partnership with Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities for a third year," said Tom Folliard, CarMax president and CEO. “The Summer Basketball League provides an outlet for young people to foster relationships among teammates and league staff by providing an organized and fun activity throughout the summer.”
“The City of Richmond is very fortunate to receive this continued support from CarMax,” said J.R. Pope, Director of the Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. “With this assistance from CarMax, we are able to offer an exciting league that attracts young people and gives us the opportunity to have a positive impact on their lives and on the City of Richmond.”
The Pine Camp courts, which were renovated with donations totaling more than $160,000 from CarMax, Inc. and the CarMax Foundation, are open and free for the public when they are not being used for league play.
CarMax is the nation's largest retailer of used cars and one of FORTUNE's "100 Best Companies to Work For." The CarMax Foundation provided more than $75,000 in grant funding in fiscal year 2010 to several nonprofit organizations throughout the Richmond area that are focused on educational and youth leadership programs.
Richmond’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities provides recreation and leisure programs, parks, and facilities for the City of Richmond to enhance quality of life. The Richmond Recreation and Parks Foundation serves as the umbrella organization for almost 50 grassroots volunteer organizations that support the Department.
