RICHMOND, Va. (May 12, 2009)-CarMax, Inc. (NYSE: KMX), the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, announced today that The CarMax Foundation has awarded $40,000 in grants to Richmond area nonprofit organizations. The grants are for programs that focus on education and youth leadership.
“Each of these organizations offers assistance and support to youth and families in the Richmond area,” said Dodie Fix, president of The CarMax Foundation and assistant vice president of procurement. “The CarMax Foundation is proud to provide grants for these programs as they directly impact the future of our community.”
The Richmond area grant recipients include:
· Children’s Health Involving Parents (CHIP of Greater Richmond) - $10,000 for the School Readiness program. CHIP works with the whole family to prepare both the child and his parents for enrollment in school while working to remove any barriers that may prevent the child from regularly attending school.
· St. Joseph’s Villa - $10,000 for the Children's Services for Homeless Families program. The program is divided up into three main components: literacy, parental engagement, and mentorship and tutoring. The literacy portion focuses on creating a love for reading at a very young age and working with the parents to teach them literacy skills that can be passed to their children. Mentors and tutors are trained to encourage positive social interaction and increase academic success.
· Boys and Girls Club of Metro Richmond - $5,000 for the afterschool programs at the Southside Unit. The Boys and Girls Clubs reach at-risk youth in Richmond neighborhoods and provide afterschool programs that help club members build a commitment to education, technology skills, strong personal relationships, and leadership skills. These programs emphasize the importance of setting a good example at home and at school and making healthy lifestyle choices.
· Chattering Children - $5,000 for the Financial Assistance Program. Chattering Children provides specialized therapy for children ages five weeks to ten years old with severe hearing loss. The organization also provides training for parents, which helps develop age-appropriate communication and literacy. The organization’s goal is to never refuse these services based on a family’s inability to pay.
· Communities in Schools of Richmond (CIS) - $5,000 for the Richmond Full Service Middle Schools. Communities in Schools believes that students can and will achieve academically when tailored resources are accessible to them. The CIS Model, which targets those students most likely to drop out of school, now has seven full-time programs at Richmond-area middle schools.
· Jacob’s Ladder - $5,000 for the Summer Enrichment Camp. This month-long camp, which provides an academic environment, art studio, and sports facilities, hosts at-risk youth who have been identified as academically or intellectually gifted. The organization assists the children to reach their full academic potential, while also working with their families on financial planning for higher education.
